Frequently Asked Questions
Classes, Registration, and Scheduling
As we prepare for our 25/26 season, we want to clarify an important part of our class structure. This year, families will need to choose either the full set of ballet classes that are part of the Academy Track, or the single class offered through the Flex Track.
These two tracks are not interchangeable – mixing and matching between Academy and Flex Track classes will not be permitted due to curriculum design and scheduling logistics.
Each track has been carefully planned to support the progression and consistency of our dancers, and the schedules are set and will not be adjusted.
If you have any questions about which track is the best fit for your dancer, please email Ballet Education Manager, Megan Forney.
The Academy Track: This program is for dancers who are ready for a serious and comprehensive training experience. Students in the Academy Track are required to take all classes designated for their specific level, ensuring a consistent and progressive development of their ballet technique and artistry.
Flex Track - 1 Class Option: For families and dancers seeking a more flexible schedule or a less intensive commitment, our Flex Class is an excellent choice. This option allows students to take just one class per week, completely separate from the Academy's required classes. It still provides high-quality instruction from our experienced faculty, offering a strong foundation in ballet technique within a supportive and engaging atmosphere.
If you choose Academy Track, your dancer will take ALL of the classes that are required for their growth and progression.
If you choose the Flex Track, your dancer will take ONE specific class for his/her level.

Ballet evaluations are important to both the dancers and their teachers because it opens a line of communication concerning the dancer’s progress. It helps both dancers and parents understand why dancers are at the class levels that the teachers have placed them. It is also a great way for dancers to really see where they are and their potential to grow.
The advancement of a dancer happens through correct repetition of steps and development of physical strength until both mental and physical comprehension has been reached. Every student is different and reaches this comprehension at different times. It is better for the student to wait until his or her body has fully matured and understands the movement at one level before moving on to a more complicated level.
Our DBS faculty is trained to evaluate the students and understand each child’s physical development. We evaluate each dancer on their individual qualities. Once we have done that, we start to look at each level as a whole. Essentially, we try to balance the good of each level with the progress of the individual. In every level, there will be students that excel in certain aspects and students that struggle with certain aspects. The goal is to blend each level, where ALL students have the ability to progress, are “comfortably uncomfortable," help each other grow as a collective, and attain personal goals.
The evaluation has two components: technique and etiquette. The technique section includes turn out, use of center, how arms are held, hip alignment, and more. The etiquette section includes hair, clothing, timeliness, ability to memorize combos, respect for teacher and peers, and more for all levels.
The written test will evaluate the student’s knowledge of ballet positions as well as comprehension of ballet vocabulary starting in Level 4 up to Level 7.
Classes are divided by level, based on teacher recommendations. It is important that a child master each level before they proceed to the next so that they fully understand the movement and the quality that it utilizes. Our ballet levels are not structured like schools. This means dancers will not automatically move to a new level each year. Their placement is based solely on personal growth and accomplishment and how that relates to the each level as a collective class.
All Dayton Ballet School students should be able to enter any studio in the country and display proper technique and ballet knowledge. We teach these important skills even in our youngest ballet classes.
Please remember, that your dancer needs your support and the support of their teachers during every stage of their personal dance journey, the high and the lows.
In keeping with the tradition of classical ballet, each class level will be assigned a specific color and style of leotard.
Uniform guidelines:
- Pre-Ballet and Creative Movement may wear Corps Dancewear leotard with attached skirt.
- Level 6 and Level 7 may wear Corps Dancewear skirts in matching
color to their assigned leotard. - No skirts for Preparatory Level - Level 5.
- Revolution ballet sweaters may be worn in class.
- Tights and shoes should match each other in either pink or flesh tone
for female dancers. (If wearing pink, please choose Revolution Classic
Pink Stretch ballet shoe).
Visit the Uniforms page to find and order your class's uniform.
Dayton Ballet School sources its uniforms from Corps Dancewear. When placing your order, use discount code KD_DAYTON to make sure your leotard comes with our logo on it and to receive 20% off your order.
All items are branded dancewear; they are considered custom order and cannot be exchanged or returned. We have some samples at the studio to try on before you make your purchase.
Parents may reach out to sales@corpsdancewear.com for questions.
If you have a leotard that is still part of our DBS uniform, we can collect and try to consign them for you.
No jewelry, watches, or necklaces in class or rehearsals!
For Open Division classes, teens are expected to wear a solid-colored leotard, pink tights, and ballet shoes. Adults may wear comfortable clothing that they can move freely in.
Dayton Ballet School is located on the fourth floor of the historic Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton. Our address is 140 N Main Street. To get to our studios, you'll enter into the building, go down the short hallway, and use the elevator.
Children's Division dancers (Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet, Preparatory Ballet) should be brought to Floor 5 by a parent or guardian and wait for the teacher to take the class down to Floor 4. Teacher will bring them back up to the Floor 5 after class.
Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and Boys should be brought to Floor 4 by a parent or guardian. Parents can pick them up on Floor 4 at the end of their class.
Levels 5, 6, and 7 may use the dressing room on Floor 5 or may come to Floor 4 after being dropped off. After they are done, parents can meet them on the 1st floor.
